Portrait of Aveline
Aveline (Ave)
Gift: Timecraft

Aveline grew up believing she was not Gifted and held no Craft. Raised in the Outskirts of Vireth by her Ironbound mother, Rowena, she has lived on the edge of poverty. Because of Rowena's work in the gardens, Aveline has never gone hungry, but she has watched those around her do so for years. Her father is listed as Ian Blackmere, someone Rowena was quite close to prior to his death fifteen years before the story begins.

Aveline is physically unremarkable, considered neither pretty nor ugly. Her build is average, and she has no exceptional strength, skill, or intelligence. Her real talent is calculating risk through information. She is careful and stoic, deeply internal, and unlikely to display emotion in front of others.

Her Gift, Timecraft, manifests early in the story, setting off a chain of events that will cause her to confront the realities of the world she lives in.

Portrait of Sorrel
Sorrel
Gift: Lifecraft

Sorrel is a Citizen-born student, raised at the Academy. He is very rarely allowed to communicate with his family and never allowed to visit them. Over the years, he has grown resentful and disenchanted with the systems Vireth has put in place, having experienced firsthand the inequities of a supposedly "balanced" society.

He is sarcastic and bold, and he believes deeply in doing the right thing even when it puts him in danger. At the Collegium, he quickly befriends Ave and becomes one of her greatest sources of comfort.

His Gift is Lifecraft. He is quite skilled at healing skin and muscle injuries like bruises and cuts.

Portrait of Marlowe
Marlowe
Gift: Alchemcraft

Marlowe grew up between worlds. Her mother was a former Noble who lost her status by marrying a Craftbound man. As a result, Marlowe was required to attend the Academy with other Citizen/Craftbound students from age 5 before going to the Collegium, but unlike Citizen-born students she is allowed to communicate with her family regularly and return home for visits.

She is bubbly and enthusiastic, and also very intelligent (even shrewd), particularly when it comes to reading other people. At her core, Marlowe is open and honest, and she expects the same in return. She believes in Vireth, in its purpose, and in its narrative, until she learns some uncomfortable truths at the Collegium.

Her Gift is Alchemcraft, and she is especially adept at mixing serums and potions that affect a person's Gift in different ways.
