About This Contest

For the first time, three of Vireth's characters are stepping out of the manuscript and into your hands. Draw Aveline, Marlowe, and Sorrel in whatever style calls to you, and you could win a $100 gift card (Amazon, PayPal, or Visa, depending on availability where you live) and a signed copy of The Name She Was Given when it's released.

The Characters

Aveline (Ave)

Female, age 14. Brown hair, either braided into a crown or gathered in a simple chignon at the base of her neck. Light brown eyes, medium-fair complexion. Average build and average looks — deliberately unremarkable, not conventionally striking or thin.

Marlowe

Female, age 14. Fair, freckled skin. Long, curly auburn-red hair, often unruly. Blue eyes. Average height, slight and angular build. Striking rather than conventionally pretty.

Sorrel

Male, age 14. Black, with short, tightly curled hair and dark eyes. Tall, muscular, broad-shouldered. Conventionally attractive.

All three should be shown in world-appropriate, medieval-inspired attire — necklines and fabrics consistent with middle-class dress, not noble finery.

How It Works

  1. Fill out the entry form below with your name and email address.
  2. Draw headshot/bust portraits of Aveline, Marlowe, and Sorrel, in the style of your choosing, following the descriptions above.
  3. Email your submission to welcometovireth@gmail.com — from the same email address you used in the entry form.
  4. After the deadline, all eligible submissions will be posted for public voting.
  5. Cast your vote for your favorite entry on welcometovireth.com.
  6. The winner will be announced and contacted by email.

Official Rules

  1. Art must be fully original. No AI-generated or AI-assisted submissions will be accepted. Digital artists must be able to show proof the art was hand-drawn by them (screenshots with timestamps, process files, etc.) if requested.
  2. Submissions must be headshot/bust portraits only, of Vireth's three main characters: Aveline (Ave), Marlowe, and Sorrel.
  3. You may draw in any style you choose, but all three characters must be drawn in the same style.
  4. All three characters may appear on the same page, but each must be drawn as its own separate portrait.
  5. Scans, photographs, and digital art files are all accepted. Sculptures, textile art, photography of physical objects, and other 3D media are not eligible — the piece itself must be a 2D drawing or painting, whether created traditionally or digitally.
  6. Accepted file formats: .jpeg, .png, or .pdf.
  7. You retain full ownership of your artwork regardless of outcome. By submitting, you grant Renee Bell a non-exclusive license to publish your entry on welcometovireth.com and use it to promote the contest and the public vote, with credit given to you as the artist.
  8. Only the winning entry may be used to help promote The Name She Was Given beyond the contest itself. Being selected as the winner does not guarantee your art will appear in the published book or in any marketing beyond welcometovireth.com and Renee Bell's own independent promotional efforts.
  9. One entry per person.
  10. Contest is open to anyone worldwide.
  11. Artists may be any age, but the person submitting the entry must be 18 or older. If the artist is under 18, the prize will be issued to the submitting adult.
  12. Submissions must be emailed to welcometovireth@gmail.com by August 31, 2026 to be eligible.
  13. Winners are determined by public vote on welcometovireth.com.
  14. Prize: a $100 electronic gift card (Amazon, PayPal, or Visa, determined by what's available in the winner's country of residence) and a signed copy of The Name She Was Given upon its release.
  15. No purchase necessary to enter or vote.
  16. Void where prohibited by law.
